چکیده

A population of distant dusty galaxies emitting in the submillimetre waveband has recently been detected using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). This population can be used to trace the amount of high-redshift star-formation activity that is obscured from view in the optical waveband by dust, and so is missing from existing inventories of star formation in the distant Universe. By including this population we can construct a complete and consistent picture of the history of star formation. The evolution of obscured star formation at redshifts less than unity is constrained by midand far-infrared counts of dusty galaxies. Activity increases with redshift z as (1 + z) with γ ∼ 4, consistent with the form of evolution found in the optical waveband by the Canada–France Redshift Survey (CFRS) to z < ∼ 1. The form of evolution at higher redshifts is constrained by both faint SCUBA counts and the intensity of background radiation in the millimetre/submillimetre waveband. We find that the total amount of energy emitted by dusty galaxies is about four times greater than that inferred from restframe ultraviolet observations, and that a larger fraction of this energy is emitted at high redshifts. The simplest explanation for these results is that a large population of luminous strongly-obscured sources at redshifts z < ∼ 5 is missing from optical surveys. We discuss the possible contribution of obscured active galactic nuclei to the submillimetre-wave background and counts. More accurate constraints on the history of star formation will be provided by determinations of the counts in several submillimetre wavebands and crucially by a reliable redshift distribution of the detected galaxies.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Origin of optically passive spiral galaxies with dusty star-forming regions: Outside-in truncation of star formation?

Recent observations have revealed that red, optically–passive spiral galaxies with little or no optical emission lines, harbour significant amounts of dust-obscured star formation. We propose that these observational results can be explained if the spatial distributions of the cold gas and star-forming regions in these spiral galaxies are significantly more compact than those in blue star-formi...

Constraints on the Star Formation History fromthe Far

Studies of the far-IR extragalactic background (FIRB) provide information on the star formation history of the universe complementary to that given by optical observations. The upper limits on the FIRB intensity resulting from recent analyses of COBE/FIRAS data entail interesting constraints on the possibility that most of the star formation activity occurring during early phases of galaxy evol...

Are E+A Galaxies Dusty-Starbursts?: VLA 20cm Radio Continuum Observation

E+A galaxies are characterized as a galaxy with strong Balmer absorption lines but without any [OII] or Hα emission lines. The existence of strong Balmer absorption lines means that E+A galaxies have experienced a starburst within the last <1-1.5 Gyr. However, the lack of [OII] or Hα emission lines indicates that E+A galaxies do not have any on-going star formation. Therefore, E+A galaxies are ...

Massive Lyman Break Galaxies at Z ∼ 3 in the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey

We investigate the properties of 1088 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 3 selected from a ∼ 2.63 deg2 sub-region of the First Look Survey field using the ground-based multi-color data and the Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data at 3–8 and 24 μm. With the wide area and the broad wavelength coverage, we sample a large number of “rare” u-band dropouts which are massive (M∗ > 10M⊙), allowing...
